If you're looking for information on a company, there are a number of sources that can help; Athens is a good place to start - both Datamonitor and Global Marketing Information Database (GMID) offer detailed, current profiles for many global organisations across numerous sectors. Reports from both of these provide a full picture of a company, giving its history, product and competitor information plus a detailed SWOT analysis. WARC looks at companies from a strategic marketing perspective illustrated with campaigns, case studies and articles.

For financial information, company reports are available - try the corporate section of the company's own website, which may have financial information. Otherwise, there is the Annual Reports Service - reports can be sent to you by email (where available). The Northcote database also provides access to annual company reports.

Annual reports can also be found at Business Insight at Birmingham Central Library. They have copies of the most recent Annual Report of the FT100 List companies quoted on the London Stock Exchange. For selected companies, they also have a useful research collection covering a five-year period.These are all available for reference and can be photocopied.

"Adopted by world leaders in the year 2000 and set to be achieved by 2015, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) provide concrete, numerical benchmarks for tackling extreme poverty in its many dimensions."

United Nations

Students searching for information on the MDGs will be pleased to find there is no shortage of resources on this subject. Reports on progress of the MDGs can be found at the UNDP website as well as news, statistics and a calendar of events. MDGs can be tracked by country or goal, here; progress can also be tracked in the national MDG reports published by UNDP.

The End Poverty 2015 campaign website has a page dedicated to a variety of resources such as press releases, interactive media and documents. The recently published report 'The Millenium Development Goals Report 2011' can be found here.

The World Bank has its own webpage which includes the reports 'The MDGs & the Road to 2015' and 'Unfinished Business: mobilizing efforts to achieve the 2015 MDGs'.

The high street enjoyed a bounceback in sales last month, official figures revealed today, but revised estimates show snow-hit December was even worse than originally feared.

Retail sales volumes declined 1.4% month-on-month in December, downgraded from a 0.8% drop, which was already the worst performance on record for the month, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.

But sales rebounded in January, growing by 1.9%, as shoppers returned to the high street after being trapped at home by the severe weather and to beat the VAT hike from 17.5% to 20%. For more on this story click here...

Many companies and organisations, in public and private sectors, across most industries, rely on a central hub of staff to provide customer service over the telephone; this may be to answer queries, take orders or handle complaints. Indeed, there are organisations whose main business is conducted almost entirely over the telephone.

Direct Line was the first UK company to sell insurance policies this way; the benefits of 'cutting out the middle man' were passed on to their customers in the form of discounted premiums. Back in 1985, this was a very new concept; there have been many developments since, including the Internet, which has become the 'shop front' for both new and existing businesses (but that's a post for another day).

There are numerous resources online in Athens, including Contact Centres Market Report 2010 in Keynote; the UK Contact Centre Industry: A Study is a report commissioned on behalf of the DTI, providing a detailed background to this topic, factors impacting the UK call centre industry, key competitors and a SWOT analysis. The Institute of Employment Studies looks at call centres from the employee viewpoint in Well-being and Call Centres; they have also published a more recent report entitled Your Call: managing reward and performance in call centres.

World Challenge 2010

Now in its sixth year, World Challenge is a global competition aimed at finding projects or small businesses from around the world that have shown enterprise and innovation at a grassroots level. It aims to champion and reward projects and businesses which make a real difference.

As there are a number of students looking for further information on some of the pioneers in management theory, here are a few resources to get the ball rolling.

An article found in Emerald (Athens) entitled 'The History of Management: a global perspective' (Pindur and Rogers, History of Management, Vol.1(1)1995), gives an historical overview of this subject. There are many books which discuss classical theorists - 'Management and Organisational Behaviour' by Mullins (available in Dawson Books via Athens) and 'Management: theory and practice' by Cole (658 COL) are just a couple. Several titles written by Mintzberg are available in the Library.

Biz/ed, which has been discussed in a previous post, have included bite-sized pieces of info on the major theorists. Taylor, Maslow, Herzberg and Vroom are covered in Examstutor and the topic has also been covered extensively by Businessballs.com.

Congratulations to a UCB team of chef, food service students and of course, their lecturers, who have recently won one of the most prestigious hospitality competitions in the UK - the coveted title of Nestlé Toque d’Or Champions 2010, beating off competition from four other UK catering colleges. Each team served a three-course lunch to 100 paying guests at the BBC Good Food Show held at the NEC in June.

The worldwide rankings are produced annually from the most recent Worldwide Quality of Living Survey, conducted by Mercer. Now that the dust has settled...and aircraft seem to be ruling the skies again, the cost of the volcano eruption is being counted. The economic impact of the natural disaster is discussed in this article, including the winners and losers in tourism; the direct impact on tourism is considered here.

The Economist gives its view and believe we should be better prepared for natural disasters and also asks whether our flight is absolutely necessary? As passengers agonised on how to get back home, cruise ships have been busy as they step in to help.
Ironically, as most of the airports around Europe resume flights, Iceland shut down flights for the first time last Friday, due to winds dropping and the ash cloud becoming static above the island.

The question of how much responsibility airlines have towards passengers in such a situation, has been asked here and there is also a guide on how to protect your holiday through tour operators.

As I've previously posted, Birmingham's been shortlisted for the title of UK City of Culture 2013. Birmingham now needs YOU to help us win by taking part in a Blogging Day. As many people as possible who live or work in, or visit Birmingham, are asked to write a blog post between 12 noon on Friday 23rd April and 12 noon on Saturday 24th April to talk about cultural activities they are enjoying in the city. This will map 24 hours in the cultural life of Birmingham to form part of the bid; it will show just how much goes on in the city and how important culture is to people.

All you have to do is include any activities you will be taking part in, whether it's arts and crafts workshops, book clubs, rehearsals and performances by professional and amateur companies, visual arts, museums, festivals and events, college projects, nights out at the theatre, comedy or live music and dance.
